First Universalist Church of
West Chesterfield
Religion is not something separate
and apart from ordinary life. It is
life – life of every kind viewed from
the standpoint of meaning and
purpose: life lived in the fuller
awareness of its human quality
and spiritual significance.

Special Occasions
Weddings at the First Universalist Church of West
Chesterfield are created by the couple and for the couple.
A wedding at the first Universalist Church may be a good
match for you if you would like a faith based wedding, but
are looking for something without restrictions.
Many people getting married in our church or by our
ministers come from mixed faith backgrounds, want to be
wed on days when their religion of origon does not permit,
or wish to form their own special service with the wording
and structure that is most meaningful to them.
Special Services
Throughout the Year
A funeral service for your loved one should be
whatever your family member would have wanted. In
these times of grief we do all things possible to help
you make this happen.
Christenings
Funeral Service
At the First Universalist Church we offer two kinds of
christenings based on your religious or faith based
beliefs. As with our weddings those involved have many
options as to how the service is formed. Weather you
are interested in a very traditional christening or in a
community based welcoming service, our congregation
looks forward to welcoming all new life into our
community.
Weddings
Water Communion
The Water Communion is one of our most
significant services of the year. It takes place
the first Sunday service in September, after the
August break.
At the service all members bring in a small
amount of water that they have taken from
someplace special or is symbolic of something
to them.
During the service all of the water is combined
and blessed by the community. The water of our
spiritual community is then used as the
ceremonial water for baptisms and any other
special service.
Service of Music
The Music Service is a special congregation led
service. The service is primarily made up of
hymns and congregational readings. It is a
beautiful late fall tradition that shouldn't be
missed.
Christmas Candlelight Service
The Christmas candlelight service has been an
ongoing tradition at the First Universalist Church
of West Chesterfield since the 1960’s. The
service, made up of songs, community readings,
and Christmas stories from scripture, is one of
the most unique and spiritual services
throughout the year.
At the Christmas Service members of the
congregation have an opportunity to stand up
and give readings or sing songs, and all of the
children are invited up to the podium to hear a
very special Christmas story.
At the end of the service the congregation is
asked to form a circle around the church, using
the aisles, and light their candels one by one.
This circle is referred to as “the circle of light and
life”. As one lit flame passes from one candle to
another it symbolizes how one person’s life can
affect another and how spiritual belief can affect
us all.
